Subject: High school laptop?
So I bought son #1 a MacBook pro in 9th grade and just had to replace it sr year of college. Son #2 has MacBook pro from 9th grade and still going strong as fresh in college. Son #3 has MacBook pro from 9th grade going into jr year high school. Maybe if you invest a little more money to get more, it lasts more? and all my boys keep a hard shell on it and all three use it primarily for school and netflix. They don't play games on it.

Thanks for the tips. He won't commute with it, but prefers a laptop to a desktop so he can move around at home. He's a rising junior and probably will get one for college, and this one can go to a younger sibling then.

Just be kind to your kid if the thing doesn't last. My son's definitely suffered from being carried around in a 30 lb back pack. The hinges on the screen part went. I think he did a reasonable job taking care of the laptop while commuting on a bike.

If the high school supports it, a Chromebook, rather than a Windows or Apple notebook. If the high school emphasizes Chromebooks, definitely use it. It lasted us through four years (we had two as one was damaged -- no big deal -- $200 on Amazon). We transitioned to Apple for college. We used the cheapest ASUS Chromebooks and they were fine.

What would you recommend for about $400 for a laptop for a high schooler? It doesn't need to last to college, and he's not a huge gamer.
