I am really confused how you can afford an MDX and not the Highlander. We bought the top-of-the line Highlander last year because of its CR safety and reliability ratings, and it was much less than the Acura MDX. Our second choice was the Santa Fe.

We have an Outback and a Highlander. Prefer driving the smaller Outback around town but feel safer on the highway in the larger Highlander. Happy with both vehicles.

Setting aside the dork factor of a wagon, an SUV is heavier and has a higher occupant seating position which means it will protect its occupants better in the event of a crash.

Look at IIHS website. I’m pretty sure Subaru is consistently getting better safety ratings than Volvo these days. Must have front end collision avoidance though. For Subaru, that’s called eyesight.

Totaling a car is simply an insurance term. It can range from a bent frame (on an older car - not worth fixing) to a catastrophic accident. Sounds like the OP and his/her kids are fine, otherwise the OP would have mentioned it.

That said, Subaru's are solid vehicles, but the Acura MDX is larger and higher.

Right now you're desperate for safety, but take a deep breath. The safest thing you can do is keep your head on a swivel. Unfortunately, kids in the back can be a massive distraction, and may cause you to take your eyes off the road. Resist this temptation, but if you can't, pull over to the side of the road or a parking lot. Pulling over will have a dramatic effect on children's behavior.

If you want safe, don't get an SUV (or get a Tesla Model X, but those are super expensive). Seriously.

I have the MDX and I love it, can't compare it to the other cars. The package we got cost us $50k.
