Hyundai recently had a recall over a part that could potentially cause fires so we took ours in to a dealership last weekend. Got it fixed quickly and at no cost. It's a good company.

It is very reliable. We have two Hyundai cars, the Santa Fe and the Elantra, both 2010. We bought the Elantra secondhand in 2011 with 11,000 miles on it.
We have had zero problems.
Hyundai gives a very long (five-year) warranty, which you will probably get the benefit of if you purchase it.

I traded my 2000 Elantra for a 2008 Veracruz and have also been fairly happy, but definitely would recommend getting an extended warranty if possible.
We've gotten to at least 90k miles on the cars that we traded in and my Veracruz is at 100k and I'm expecting a few more years out of it. Our nanny has a 2008? Sonata with 198k miles that is still running fine, but the trim is definitely starting to fall apart. She takes her car to a mechanic who fixes door handles, AC, etc for MUCH less than the dealership would charge.

I wouldn't. even last night, there was a report (ABC World News Tonight) about Kia (Hyundai is the parent co of Kia) and some Hyundai models catching fire.
