Washington Spirit requires driving between Germantown and Columbia. Germantown is feasible but Columbia is a non-starter.

I've always been grateful to live in MoCo, given that MSI offers a lot of good, low to moderate price options for a variety of skill levels. Bethesda has been great for our boys, both in terms of training and college recruitment.


Bethesda ECNL/Whitman coach is as serious as anyone, i.e. a great coach. A define a money grab as any club that has multiple teams per category without providing any serious effort to develop those players. I consider a program serious about development if they only have one or two teams per age. I know Layton shut down his u13 B squad because he did not have enough quality players that he felt he could develop and promote over the years. He is a great coach but his style wouldn't work for my kid. Some kids thrive off of get's cursed at during games and while others don't do well.

At the end of the day, NoVA just has more options and a more serious, less status-focused culture.

You are correct in that there are more clubs (and more options) in Northern Virginia concentrated within a small area.

If you lived in tysons corner, you have a choice between Arlington, PAC, Mclean, Vienna, Annendale, BRYC, FPYC, Reston, Great Falls. We're not scratching the surface of options south of the beltway or closer to Dulles. Between those clubs, there are many options, many levels of play, and many price points. Whereas MoCo there are about 5 options.

That is why there is no "Gaithersburg United" and Rockville FC" type of clubs. The county manages so much through its rec program that there people didn't feel the need to start their own programs. People in Montgomery county are not as into soccer generally as say fairfax co - this is just because of the environment. In FFXco there is a different soccer club every 4 miles, all competing for the same players, and all developing their own players. MoCo there is none of this type of territorial competition, which fuels the push to put together competitive teams.

This is because MSC for a long time nearly monopolized soccer in MoCo and provided a "good enough" option for people. This is no longer the case for boys though, there are MANY independent boys programs all around Montgomery county and the silver spring area.

Your other options-

A good MSC Classic team
MSC Premier
Damascus Soccer Club
Potomac - play an age group up if they aren't that good
Otherwise, focus on your high school team half the year and play club the other half

Well you named all the clubs that produce except Bordeaux because the don't have a team in that age group but if you are searching for a specific type of play, close to home I suggest starting your own club barbecue you will never find everything you want in one club

I have struggled to find serious options for u12/u13-aged girls in MoCo. Bethesda is 100% money-grab with good training but not great given the cash outlay. MRM Rush's Kevin Layton has a great track record but his style is unique. FC Bordeaux has great training but that age group is still developing. Potomac is lacking at this age. There are great clubs in Baltimore County, Howard County and Arundel County but that is too far to travel. Compared to NoVA, MoCo is very weak. McLean and Arlington are feasible. Loudoun, FCV, Herndon, and BRYC are all great but too far to travel.
