I was added as well after the new student and parent orientation. The school creates a page for each class and adds all of the parents.

Some of the questions are humorous, like the mom who asked if it was okay to send water shoes as shower shoes because her son hated flip flops. But a lot are just 100% insane helicoptering. Parents already wanting to step in and cause waves for things they perceive may be an issue! Like roommate assignments and class assignments. “Dr. Smith has a bad rating and this is a class my kid will need for his major. Who can I speak to about getting this class switched?” “Dd’s Roommates Instagram page has lots of pictures of her parting and drinking. What should I do about this?”

I can't tell you about OPs school, but for my son's school there is nothing important on the parent page. I get the occasional spirit picture in my feed, which gives me the warm fuzzies. The class of 22 page is active as a place to start finding room mates or connecting with an assigned room mate, but that group (thankfully) is secret and only for actual students.

They exist for my kid's schools, but I'm not on them. We do just fine.

This reminds me of the FB for DD’s sleepaway camp. It’s like people have lobotomies as soon as they have kids.

Ours is similar and run by parents not the university. Half of the time I'm shocked by the questions and the rest of the time I try to contain my DC-snarkiness and realize these are really nice people and I'm glad my child will be getting out of this bubble.

No money involved. I’m in a college parent fb group (not a college admin group) and about 25% of the chatter is utterly inane. 25% is mere helicoptering. 50% is actually useful and sometimes very helpful. From good hotel rates to great nearby restaurant recommendations to invaluable hurricane preparation and evacuation help when Irma blew through the campus.

This is a money grab.

Yikes, I have been accused of hovering, but this is out of my league.

It's not a thing for sane parents. College kids are (or should be) adults. Most parents cut the umbilical cord. We have four in or through college. This is definitely not a thing.

good to hear!! I cannot imagine micro managing on that level. I think my boys would be mortified.

It's not a thing for sane parents. College kids are (or should be) adults. Most parents cut the umbilical cord. We have four in or through college. This is definitely not a thing.

Are you new to DCUM? Because those questions are a dime a dozen here. The difference is that posters are really anonymous.

Really? With my son's school we use the parents page to receive information (like "sign up for this newsletter"), not ask about trivialities.

I got added the parents’ Facebook group for my son’s college class of 2022. The questions some of these parents are asking- OMG. Makes me worried these kids are going to be totally useless in the real world/once they’re out from Mom’s guidance. Example: “I hear that jeans aren’t really in style anymore. Do we freshen up our son’s wardrobe this summer or are jeans OK to class?” “My daughter got paired with a random roommate and looked at her Instagram. It looks like they have very different interests. How to approach this.”
