The tuition-thing you are thinking of is the $ APS charges people that are caught falsifying residency documents. APS can require cheaters to pay for the time their kids were illegally enrolled.

If you move from APS, you must withdraw your student. They cannot stay through the end of the year.

Well, if they sell their house to someone with kids who then enrolls other kids using the same address, the jig will be up. This is bad advice.

I think it's just the annual per student cost as reported to the state.

OP, if you can an official answer from APS, would you mind sharing it here? I'm sure there are other people out there considering the same thing and would find it helpful.

Why don't you just not tell them you moved? You're not obligated to.

You may want to postpone your move.

The same with 8th grade too, they let you finish out the year if you move. I would think if they do it in 8th and 12th they might in 5th as well.

Depending on when in the school year, I'm not sure I would notify them.

Yes, we know. Even that is considered a discretionary transfer, they are not obligated to let you stay in APS unless your child will be a high school senior in the fourth quarter of the school year when you move. APS has not allowed non-grandfathered discretionary transfers for non-residents for a few years now because our schools are too crowded.

Of course, you could always just call APS and ask them rather than posting it to DCUM if you’d like a more official answer.

Technically the policy allows you to request to finish the school year (unless you're a senior who moves after the start of the fourth quarter, then you can stay tuition-free by right), but I'm pretty sure APS isn't allowing any discretionary out-of-county transfers other than ones grandfathered in after they did away with things like the employee transfer program a few years ago.

Arlington bars non-residents. Paying tuition is not an option. There are policies about finishing a year — depends on when you move. But enrolling again next year would not be allowed.
