I believe that the substitution of AP tests for SOLs is a fairly recent development. My DD ('16 grad) had to take the world history SOL, but I remember getting paperwork from the school last year advising that kids could choose to just take the AP test in certain subjects (and being surprised about it!) The teacher warned them that they likely wouldn't get pass advanced. The SOL covers the FCPS World History 2 curriculum and it's not the same as the AP curriculum.

Also, students need to pass 6 SOLs to graduate and have the opportunity to take more than that, so it makes sense that they could skip some. My senior has 9 verified credits.

Congrats on the 5.

The SOLs are a state requirement you have to take regardless of any APs.

Actually in AP tests, the SOL's are often optional.

I mean AP clases. If you are taking the AP test, the SOL is optional.

FAKE NEWS!!!!!!!!! SOL TEST ARE NOT OPTIONAL

They are for some classes

No, they are not. If there is an SOL test for a specific subject, a student HAS to take the SOL. Some kids take advance courses like AP classes that cover the subject matter, some kids take a "regular" class that covers the subject matter. There are even some instances where a kid might simply study on their own and then take the SOL (some kids at my DD's school do this for Earth Science--they want to take other AP science courses and don't want to lose a spot to an Earth Science credit). Regardless though, if there is an SOL for it, you HAVE to take it in order to graduate from a Virginia high school.

There is indeed a lot of fake news about this. People also need to understand that the "opt out" option that exists in elementary and middle school disappears in high school. They are required for high school. In recent years, there has been an overall reduction in the number of SOL tests for grade 3-12, but the ones that still exist for grades 9-12 must be taken.

That appears to be a list of substitute tests for SOLs for graduation purposes.

These include CLEPs, SAT 2, SAT 1 scores, AP exams, ACT scores, Cambridge Exams, IB exams.

The AP is much harder, but the SOL tests wider and more specific subject-matter knowledge. The two tests are not the same and simply don't examine the same things.

OP here. This, plus in the AP class, the prep work is for the AP test. They did not care about the SOL. I know my DD was really focused on the AP test, but did not study or anything for the SOL.

Post 07/07/2018 14:02     Subject: SOL's vs AP test for ap classes

For some reason, my daughter took the AP test and the SOL for World History. She was under the impression that, if she did not pass the AP test, she had to take the SOL, and she was worried about passing the AP test.

She passed the SOL, but not pass-advanced. Yet she got a 5 on AP test.

That just cracks me up.
