I think that it's hard to find diner that has edible food. The theory is great, but the reality is that maybe you get a great old character of a waiter, with a side of stomach pain.

oh geez. EVERYTHING is cheaper and better in NYC. Dumplings from a random cart. Egg and cheese on a roll. Bagels. Slices. Try just walking into a random place and aee what you get.

That's ridiculous. Try Chinatown where you can get 6 delicious dumplings or scallion pancakes for $1.25. Or the egg cake lady street vendor who sells delicious fresh made cakes for $1.25. There's plenty of good fast casual in NYC too. Perhaps this will inspire you.

What people in Manhattan really often do to eat cheaply: food trucks, or delis with food-by-the pound food bars.

Cheap, offbeat entertainment: Look for small movies premiering at the Quad Cinema on a Friday. Those are often indie movies, and the filmmakers may be in the theater to talk about the movie. They will be very grateful if you come see their movies.

Another cheap, unpredictable source of entertainment: go to a comedy open mic just to watch. Go in with very low expectations and you may find the experience interesting, if not especially funny.

Another way to get a somewhat better show: go to a real comedy club and ask when they do the showcases where would-be comics have to bring paying guests. Go be paying guests to support some poor comic who doesn't have enough paying guests. Chances are some of the performers will be awful but some will be great, and the price will be a lot lower than for a regular show.

One of DH and I fave cheap places to go pre-DB was Taco Tuesdays at Cowgirl Seahorse near the Seaport. They have $2 tacos all day on Tuesdays and a happy hour until 7. There are a few other places that do Taco Tuesdays as well, can look up online.

Check DeKalb food market in downtown Brooklyn. Great selection of international street foods for very reasonable prices and they have $5 wine.

Can also get a cheap glass of wine if you ride the NYC Ferry.
