As stated already, many use it to get in to an academic school, often a D3 SLAC. Some schools will combine merit to give a bigger package but it's typically no where close to full scholarship.
Its also very commonly used to help get in to one of the Ivies. Tons of kids around here go on to play lacrosse at Ivy League schools.
