Yes, the only nonstops to Asheville are on Allegiant (ugh), Fridays and Mondays only, 1 flight per day each way. If that doesn't work, the next best flight option is to fly to Charlotte- it's just under a 2 hour drive to Asheville. But like others said, probably easier to just drive the whole way and skip flying.

Greenville, SC is actually closer than Charlotte. Direct flights out of DCA on American.

We went in October and I agree. That said, we flew into Greenville, SC and drove to Asheville. Was pleasantly surprised by Greenville - very nice and I would like to go back!

I just drove there and back to pick up my son at camp. 1000 miles in 2 days. And I have never driven more than 4 hrs by myself. It took 9 hrs down and 8 hrs back, though I went a bit further to Brevard. It was long but a beautiful drive. He wants to go back next year but I would like to figure out if he can fly one direction. 2 girls from dc flew to the camp and got diverted to South Carolina, and the camp had to go pick them up there!

Any thoughts on kid friendly places to stay?

Would love to go without kids so maybe we will try to do that with grandparents babysitting.

We drove with our kids during spring break. It wasn't bad. Not that you asked, but if you have the option of going without your kids, I'd do that. My husband and I would have had much more fun in Asheville without the kids. But even with the kids, the drive is no big deal. I considered breaking it up with a night in a town somewhere in-between, but am glad I didn't.

Drive. It's too annoying to fly. Asheville, like Columbus OH (we have friends there), is one of those places where driving is better.

If you want to break up the trip, there are lots of places to stay. We like stopping in Wytheville, VA. Stay at the Bolling Wilson and have breakfast at the coffee shop a block away with homemade croissants.

We recently finished a 10-day family roadtrip. Asheville was one of the stops. Such a wonderful drive through Shenandoah. With a baby? You may want to take a break and stay overnight in one of the lovely Park Service vacation cabins.

Yep, beautiful drive through Shenandoah Valley and, later in the trip, I-26 through the mountains.

Drive. Getting to the airport early, connecting flight,etc. doesn’t save you a ton of time and with little kids the connecting flight could be stressful.

Do you just drive? Fly somewhere and then drive? We would love to visit but have two little kids and I’m not sure a road trip of that length is worth it.
