I personally like Subaru with eyesight. Great all wheel drive, legendary even.

We have a 2018 Subaru. Love it.

Civics are more expensive to insure. It’s the number one most stolen vehicle, even late models.

All cars manufactured in the last ten years have the same basic safety features - airbags and antilock brakes. What else do you think you need?

Presumably lower insurance rates.

The blindside spot checker, not sure what it is called? To help with lane changes on highways (Beltway and 3-lane roads)

We bought a Subaru (not for a teen) because of its crash test performance. I also think a backup camera is really important. Yes I can drive without one but they help so much.

Toyota Corolla. It has all the newest whiz-bang safety features, even at the lowest trim level. (Most brands only offer some of them at higher trim levels or as options.). The engine is sufficient but not overpowered. Low maintenance and not too expensive to insure or repair. Plus Consumer Reports gives it top rankings, and it's affordable.

I think there are other considerations. Like small cars -- do they have structural reinforcement and side airbags? Those were reasons we chose Honda Fit over other cars. Granted it's 2009, maybe they all do side airbags now, but I thought the reinforcement was important for a small car w/ so many suvs on the road.
