As others have pointed out, it is for the child's safety. Yes, get a notarized letter. And mail a scanned copy to both of you so you have an electronic version if you need it.
Great idea !

Agreed! I’m mixed, but look more AA and my DD looks more Latina. In addition to the letter, she was asked if I was her mom and other small details about the trip (did dad know we were going to Canada, we were going home). I was not offended.

These days parents who have a different race than their kids may get stopped to make sure human trafficking isn’t happening. I also am not offended. If some other white lady where trying to travel with my mixed kid I’d want her stopped after all.

It's to prevent child abduction by one parent and it is a good thing.
My sister in law her her notarized letter at the bottom of ER diaper bag on her way into Canada with her 8 month old. Her husband was already there waiting to pick them up and they insisted on the letter even though he could vouch he was the father.
Yes, you do. You will be asked to show it twice (leaving US and entering France). We haven’t been asked leaving France.

We are traveling to Europe . My husband had to change his ticket date and will be joining kids and I later. Do we need written notorized letter that saying something like that he is given me permission to take kids to France for vacation ?
