We currently rent but are in very close-in MoCo. I don't find any discrimination or disparaging comments. If anything, I think people assume we'll buy in-bounds eventually. I know others did.
On the contrary, when we lived in DC, I absolutely sensed this. Maybe because the schools vary so much more and the competition to get your child in THE BEST SCHOOL feels much greater and more cutthroat?

No. We have friends who own, rent apts, rent houses, live OOB (lottery) and drive across town every day, etc. Do not care.
If you are renting for a short time with the express intention to get a seat IB and then move OOB but keep the seat? If you are “renting” an apt for the IB address but actually live OOB? Yes, I think both of those are dishonest.
But renting in and of itself? No.

PP again. I’d add that it’s not like we’re not friendly towards renters and don’t want to get to know them at all; it’s just that we’re not quite as invested in hanging out if they don’t plan on being here long. Of the three renting families that I can think of in my neighborhood, in the past 5 years, all left within a year or two.

When they out and out say - way are renting to get IBs and will be moving to a larger more renovated home once we establish residency - I absolutely do.

I wonder if people might be misinterpreting a bit. We were renters an excellent school district, and now we own. When I meet new families, it’s not “shade” per se, but I’m perhaps a little disappointed when I find out that they rent (although this is a rarity in my neighborhood) because you don’t want to invest in getting to know someone, have your kids befriend their’s, etc. if they may leave the neighborhood fairly soon. However, I really would try not to show any disappointment since I wouldn’t want those people to feel bad--I’ve been in their shoes.

If you are experiencing this, it may be because they suspect you are only renting there to get a seat in the school and that you may move outside the boundary once that happens, given that there is a general policy of principal discretion regarding that issue. For schools with large class sizes, it builds resentment.

Used to rent WOTP, but before kids were school age. Definitely noticed that whiff when we would be at the park and discuss what streets we lived on.
