A school sponsored sports team would give opportunities for kids that can't pay for travel or even rec sports. Scholarships are spotty in our local clubs. D.C. Plays travel soccer and it costs close to $2,000 per year. Not everyone can pay that.

Because the school-sponsored team can only include so many kids, kids have to try out, and so the spots all go to those who have been playing for a long time aka families who can afford it.

Even at high school level FCPS schools have limited subvarsity options compared to large affluent suburban schools in other parts of the country. And they threaten to eliminate freshman sports altogether every few years.

I went to a junior high school (7-9). We had a football team--don't remember if there was a basketball or baseball team. However, it may have been because ninth graders in four year high schools had access to sports teams.

Around here, there are many youth leagues. Finding sports teams is not a problem and actually gives more kids ability to participate.

+1. I like the MS where they focus on school, and don’t get sidetracked with elevating jocks and cheerleaders.

This was a HUGE shock to me when I moved here, as well. Still is.

No sports teams at schools, but there are plenty of community organizations/leagues that provide opportunities for a variety of sports and activities. (and many of them play at school gyms/fields)

It was cut in a budget crunch in the 1990's.

I asked about this at the open house and was told they encourage children to join local sports leagues since they don't have any organized sports until high school.

Is it typical for there to be no sports teams in FCPS elementary schools? It's been a very long time but I seem to remember our elementary having at least a basketball team. My daughter's ES has a choir and a band/orchestra but no sports teams at all.
