That says more about Californians than anything.

Californians can be quite provincial about colleges. For a lot of people the UCs are the center of the universe and anything that’s not a UC or an Ivy is just meh. Which of course isn’t true but explains the PP’s post.

That says more about your friends than it does about UVA. It's the flagship of one of our 50 states. It's like saying you haven't heard of the University of Texas, or Michigan, or New Hampshire. You may not regard it highly or know much about it, but to not have heard of it means you must walk around with your head in a bag.

NP. We lived in northern CA for 5 years and my dh is a UVA alum. People didn’t regard UVA as any different than any other big state U. It’s not that it’s unheard of, it’s just that it isn’t considered among the elites.

CA folks don't hear about a lot of things. UVA has the same ranking as UCLA.

UVA’s reputation ranking in US News is even higher than its overall ranking of 25. Yes, it’s prestigious, and not just here.

Prestigious is relative, OP.

You mean prestige, prestige is relative.

Thank you for knowing what I mean. In fact, I meant that whether a college is considered prestigious is relative.

Hard to get into? Yes, but I wouldn’t call it prestigious. It’s just a well regarded big state school like Michigan or UCLA.

No, not nationally. It’s only popular in this area. None of my CA friends have even heard of it.

I always thought it was held in high regard. Why does it not seem so on this board?
