Honda Fit is even cheaper than the Civic (and gets great fuel efficiency).

These are practically worthless after 3 years as they are truly awful cars

Yeah no you are never going to find a 2 year old used car for half price of a new one. With toyotas you might get a 10 year old car with85k miles on it for half. Maybe. Those things last forever. I currently drive a 16 year old corolla with 175k miles on it and we probably will get another 3 to 5 years out of it.

I have never seen a 2 year used car for HALF the price. Maybe a few thousand dollars off, but you are not going to find a $22k car selling for $11k with only 2 years of use. Unless those 2 years put 100,000 miles on it.

Toyota Yaris is a fun little car, lasts forever, you can park it anywhere, and even the new ones are cheaper than used Corolla or Honda.

I just bought a Corolla recently--I had to buy a car in a hurry because my old Toyota Matrix got totaled.

For the money, you can get a much nicer option package on a Corolla compared to a lot of other cars plus the safety features now included in all their cars (had the person who hit us had it, the accident would not have been as bad).

My DH, who cares far more about "performance" etc in cars than I do, really likes my car.

"60% cost of a new car "

I have not found this to be true for the past 10 years.

Buy something like a Corolla coming off a three year lease. 60% cost of a new car and they will run well for many more years.

I don't think electric cars are budget cars right now, maybe 5 years down the road. The lowest priced entry level cars I can think on the top of my heads are the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, and Honda Fit.

In the past we've had: Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3 (back when it was a Protege!), and Honda Civic.

We are leaning towards the Corolla because we can probably get the best deal.

What commuter car do you recommend for the frugal minded?
