Also, my train travel in Europe was budget, so your may have a better experience, but I'd consider flying Paris-Florence. The overnight train is an adventure but I was seasick and uncomfortable and didn't sleep well.
Seasick? What large body of water does one cross (by train, no less) to get from France to Italy?

I could easily spend a month in Paris on vacation. If you want to go somewhere else, by not take the TGV to Avignon or Cote d'Azur?
