Cashiers who can't count, laborers who can't read a work order. Great solution.

Take you pick a small city worth of kids who will fail before they start or a small city worth of kids who at least have the paperwork to go get entry level minimum wage jobs that might lead to a sustainable existence not in jail or in extreme poverty.
Those are the only two options, pick

Take you pick a small city worth of kids who will fail before they start or a small city worth of kids who at least have the paperwork to go get entry level minimum wage jobs that might lead to a sustainable existence not in jail or in extreme poverty.

Not a huge fan of Grosso, but the article suggests only a tiny fraction of students would be able to graduate under this legislation:
“Data released this month shows that 64 of the school system’s 3,623 seniors could receive a reprieve because of the legislation. Those students are at risk of not graduating for one reason: They have too many absences.“

Can they? Or are we graduating a group of young people destined to be chronically underemployed or in jail? Wouldn't another year of school help increase the number of productive members of society?

Maybe there should be. But you can't institute it now, with no notice.

Gross should be ashamed of himself. I would like there to be a basic test in order to receive a diploma that involves literacy and the ability to handle money. A lot of these kids need it.

Chances are these kids missed 30+ times in previous years too and nothing happened. There were no warnings
