So is the general consensus here that I do not need to have my son retake his Math 8 SOL? I honestly don't see the point.

LOL! You know NOT of what you speak! Please note that on the FCPS website, there is absolutely no requirement to pass MS SOLs in math and geography. Geography is not even offered in MS. In 7th grade, it's History/Social Studies, in 8th grade, it's Civics.

Some students actually don't even have to pass any HS SOLs to graduate with a standard diploma. Check out the FCPS site for graduation requirements, "students may utilize substitute tests, certifications, or the appeal process to earn verified credits". Verified credits are those "earned when a student passes a course and the associated end-of-course SOL test. " So, really, you can graduate HS in FCPS without ever having passed on SOL. But, if students do pass an SOL, it doesn't have to be the Geography SOL. One of the other History/Social Science SOLs count.

If you still want to insist that 'students do need to pass certain MS SOLs in math and geography in order to get an [sic] HS diploma', please cite your source. Otherwise, we'll remain convinced you're an ignorant twit.

For a kid who failed 8th grade math SOL above, I would figure out why. It doesn’t matter this year, but it will in math classes starting next year. You must pass 2 SOLs out of A1, A2 and Geometry to graduate. If there is a problem with math for your kid, you want to figure that out now.

I am a secondary math teacher. The requirements changed. Students now must pass 1 math SOL in high school.

I believe in Math AAP students in 6th need Pass Advanced (500 or over) on the 7th grade SOL to progress to Alebra 1 Honors or something like that. Also, if you want your kid principal placed in level 4 often they want you to have pass advanced.

My kid has 2 world history tests a quarter, and his WH teacher is using the SOL as the second test grade 4th quarter. It’s an easy A though. It’s an 80 point test and you get 80 points for a 500 (PA), plus an EC for every ten points over. My kid got a 600 and is thrilled with his 90/80. Bio, Chem had no impact. Algebra II earned extra credit points for PA.

But this is TJ, and their grading practices are non-standard, to put it mildly. Base HSs might handle it differently.

I just posted in the other SOL thread about my MS child who failed his Math 8 SOL. Is there any need to retake this? It seems pointless to me, as he's doing pretty well in the actual class (B average).

No. It is not supposed to count for a grade. Some teachers use the score to add points to a final exam if their class has one (pass = + 5%, pass advance = + 10%), but that's the only effect I've heard of.
