Between those two options I would take the long layover in Madrid if the total travel time is about the same. Nice to break it up a bit and amble around and sit at cafes for a day.
To be clear, the American Airlines no change fee policy is only for award reservations, not for normal cash flights. And whatever you change it to has to be available at the low "Saaver" level.
