I'd also recommend flykng someone other than United, frankly. I do it because I'm required to fly a US carrier, but otherwise I'd fly Japan Airlines. Much better.

Going to Japan is ok, but you fly 11 hours and then fly an additional 5-6 hours to Vietnam. Not exactly the most fun. Get the long haul done and dusted and then make the short hop.
Plus you can book a layover in HKG for a day or two and go shopping and see the city.
