13 out of 500 is very low.

There are plenty of reasons to take a gap year. My kid took a gap year because of medical issues that prevented him from going away. The treatment worked and he's heading off in the fall.

Only listed top ones. There are a total of 458 kids who reported (some didn't respond and other asked not to be included in the list).
List includes approximately 180 schools.

13 of 500 kids is not that many. In my DCs Whitman class 2 of his friends did gap years- they had already been accepted at college - one at Harvard and one at Dartmouth. They are in college now and seem to be doing well. I think most of the gap year kids at Whitman have been accepted at very good colleges already.

My DC graduated 4 years ago and this looks similar in some ways but UMD continues to go up, largely due to cost. In DCs year there were at least 10-12 who went to Cornell and several to Penn.
