Immediate PP here. Also, you can request to get service through an MCPS-approved provider and MCPS will give you a certain amount of money per year to do so. You'd need to speak with the private-religious office for details.

The only way to find out is to ask about it when you get the service plan, because the schools that SLPs attend changes a bit year to year depending on the number of students at each. Also, this service is provided through a grant which may or may not be renewed. If it is not renewed, the service will provided in the home school.

If you want the service, generally you need to go to either the home school or the school closest to the private school. They are not required to send a therapist to the private school b/c parents have chosen to place the child outside of the home school. However, there are several private schools at which there are so many students with service plans, that an MCPS does go to the school weekly. If you aren't in one of those schools, you'll need to go to the home school.

If you think your child will ever move to MCPS, do the service plan to keep the IEP active. Our son lost his IEP on return to MCPS for HS and it’s devastating. We were told the entire process starts over.


Were they in public or private schools? I have never heard of a public school being able to force a therapist out of the class room. You can literally sue for accommodations under the ADA.

We were told we had to take our kid to our Home middle school for services during the school day. That would have been very disruptive so we didn’t pursue it. Now I wonder if the old school was correct. Regardless, I’m not sure our son would have been eligible based on above comments. He had pullouts for LD and OT but had been dismissed from speech.

I believe you can negotiate where the service will be provided. But I can’t remember now if mcps allows their therapists into the private school. I ended up having to ink up my child from his school and drive him to a different mcps school for speech therapy once a week for two years. I did this just to preserve our IEP for when we returned to public school. It was painful but worth it in our situation.
