Try some summer camps....Big Train Camp and Home Run baseball camp have lots of different levels of ability. In BCC, 4th grade is the beginning of kid pitch which was a rough transition for our team. Ask on your neighborhood/school list serve and see if the local team has any open slots.

My current third grader played in kindergarten, and after saying he did not want to play for a few years says he wants to play again next spring (his younger brother has been playing for the past few years). We will see if he actually does it next year, but in the meantime we are just playing in our yard. I am a little worried about it, because I kind of wish he could still play double AA, but I think he might have to play triple AAA next year. Does anyone know? He will be 9 in August, and it would be next spring. I think I am aware that he has a "bad" birthday for little league - IIRC the cutoff is 8/31??

If you don't have one buy a glove for yourself too and play catch with him for 10 minutes every afternoon. It will make a huge difference. I am amazed and how many kids show up at the younger ages (8/9 and younger) in spring and have no idea how to throw or catch a ball. It is really obvious that no one ever took the time to play catch with them.

We used BCC in the beginning but the quality of the parent coaches was all over the map. I don’t recommend it. Little League has a good program in Montgomery County for kids starting out, plus the fields are closer than BCC fields. We used to have to trek down 270 every weekend with BCC.

See if there's a team based at his school - it might be more fun for your child if they know other kids. (Just speculating.)

There are a bunch of quality summer baseball camps that are fun; my kids have done Kidball, BCC, and Baseball Zone. All were unique but they enjoyed it and learned a bunch.

Hope that helps!

Has he played any T-ball or anything? BCC at that age can be pretty competitive. My kids started at four and is now seven and is far from one of the best players on his team.

BCC, though you may want to have your child do some Koa or Home Run Baseball (DC) over the summer. Sign ups for BCC rec for the fall are happening now.

RBBA or BCC rec teams always have a few first-timers at that age. Baseball season is almost over though so you need to wait until the fall. Maybe try a baseball camp this summer. Big Train runs one that tends to have a mix of new and experienced players.

My 2nd grader wants to start playing baseball. Suggestions for close-in MoCo learning team where a new-to-baseball 8 y/o won’t be crushed?
