This spring, I had a lot of conversations with 8th graders at a school that almost certainly none of the people on DCUM would send their kids to, and the things that they were worried about for middle and high school were things that wouldn't even occur to most of the people on this board. For example, they did not care AT ALL if there were no white kids at the school.

When you enroll your child at Sousa, Kramer, Kelly Miller, or any of the other wonderful MS options, you can talk to me. Please correct me if I'm wrong and you are willing to send your child to a school where less than 10% met or exceeded expectations on PARCC Math and ELA.

Ok one more suggestion. If you're really trying to learn something outside your bubble, then don't continue talking to people on DCUM. You're not going to make it far outside the bubble and may very well be sitting right in the middle staring at your own navel.

72 is a lot though, right? Some of these schools must be tiny, or have tiny middle school grades.

I don't think there's a single school that *every* family would want their kid to attend. Some think deal is too big, too white, no immersion, not Montessori, etc. And some wouldn't go anywhere else.

It's not the lack of Middle Schools that's a problem. Sure there are tons of Middle Schools in the district. The problem is having quality Middle Schools that families actually want their kids to attend. There are only a handful.

Now it would be good to find out if there is a national trend on middle school grades. What group of schools would be easiest to change? What is the grade range for prestigious middle schools? But the solution will probably be to make more traditional middle schools exemplary.

One of these threads on middle schools discussed syncing up the start year across middle schools. I realized I didn't know what schools were out there. I pulled the list of schools that have a 7th grade, sorted by the grades the school serves (as reported by My School DC). Asterisks are charters. There are 72 schools! I was surprised. Feel free to pull up this list when you are looking at lottery choices next year
