Could some ADHD be a type of sleep disorder? That would fundamentally change how we treat it.

Woah. Thank you for posting this. I just went down a sleep deprivation/mouth breathing/ADHD rabbit hole. We are in the process of having DC tested for ADHD. He has been a mouth breather as long as I can remember. His baby teeth are ground down because of it. The more I read, the more it sounds like my child is severely sleep/oxygen deprived. Setting up appointments with an ENT and an orthodontist ASAP.

Why isn't your child getting a nap?
Too much excitement going on? Or stress?

Your 2yo is a 2yo. Way too young to even think this about a toddler.

My ADHD dropped naps at 4.5

Well, of my three kids, only my ADHD one has been a horrible napper and overall sleeper.

Nope.

My severely ADHD son dropped his nap at a reasonable age.

My non-ADHD daughter dropped ALL naps at 12 months. Right on her first birthday.

And please don't believe anything you read in general newspapers! As a scientist, I can't tell you the times I've read a piece and gone ballistic over how the non-qualified author has distorted the science completely. most are complete and utter rubbish.

+1 All my kids (2 with ADHD, 1 NT) are great sleepers. They're all in MS/HS. It was my NT kid that stopped napping first at age 3.

NP Interesting article. Thanks for sharing

I'm the person who posted the article. I think it is possibly interesting, but I don't really know what I think about it - my kid with ADHD is a pretty good sleeper.

My ADHD kid stopped napping early on and also had a lot more trouble sitting still than other children her age. But you can't make a diagnosis at 2.5, and even if you could, there is no treatment for a kid that age.

I suggest you let just let her have plenty of physical and mental stimulation, and set clear and very consistent boundaries for any problem behaviors. If she does have ADHD, these practices will help you later.

My ADHD child napped until Kindergarten. My other child, who is not ADHD, dropped his naps as soon as he turned 2.

My 8 year old dropped her nap at 18 mos, but was ALWAYS a horrible napper. For us, I think it is part of the puzzle, but I'm hesitant to say it's a definite marker.

I don’t think there’s any correlation.

I have no idea if you can diagnose ADHD in kids that young, However, my DS, who is now 13, has ADHD and he really never napped. By 2, he had given up day napping (although he was a terrific night time sleeper and went to be early)--- I think he just couldn't turn off his brain to nap. He never ever naps even now (though his older brother can and will when he is tired).

I should say, in my DD's case, another sign. I have suspected that she has either ADD or ADHD for awhile now based on her behavior. But now she is skipping her nap and being overtired at night just makes her more hyper and she can't sleep.
