The warnings about the Cozumel ferry were scary, but wouldn't have kept us from going through with travel plans to Quintana Roo. We just wouldn't have gone to Cozumel right around that time.

The basic breakdown is:
Many people: Why would anyone ever go to Mexico, it's horribly unsafe and there are many other places just as nice. Oh, and my spouse works for the FBI/law enforcement/State and he and all his friends and everyone he knows thinks Mexico should be avoided at all costs.
Many other people: It's not any less safe than many American and European cities. I went and it was fine.

Based on the many American families I saw there, including at least a half a dozen from the DMV area that I met over the course of a week, no everyone is not avoiding Mexico.
We felt safe the whole time. Went off resort a few times for various excursions. Did all the typical precautions and everything was fine.
