Endless maintenance issues.
More then let's say Volvo.. BMW.. ? They seem to have endless problems too.
Is it an European thing or they just have too much electronic junk nowdays
that is clearly not working half the time as one company is trying to
outdo the other and put anything they can get their paws on
and then it creates problems to the buyer.
I haven't owned a BWM or Volvo.
The thing is that VW's are not BWM's (not sure why folks thing Volvo's are so great - I did own one of those and it was nothing great) but you get the same headaches.
My mechanic, who specializes in VW's, tells me that while VW's are not as high end as other German cars (BWM, Mercedes, Audi) they are just as complex with similarly expensive parts. He also tells me they sell their cars at a loss in the US because they make so much money on parts and maintenance.
Market wise VW's line up against Toyota's and Honda's. Which apparently are more reliable and less expensive to maintain. When we bought our VW we looked at Toyota, Honda, Ford and Subaru and liked the VW (we have a 2005 Passat) the most (though Subaru was close but the mileage was terrible).
If we'd have had any idea how much this car was going to cost to maintain we'd never have bought it - and we otherwise have liked the car and it has worked as advertised.
