These are kids who probably don't yet have a professional network or guidance. You were like this at one point in your life.

How so? It's factually correct & LinkedIn is the right forum for career updates. If we were talking about FB, I would get your gripe.

Why do you need to post about it? Update your profile when you start the job.

Why? My former intern has done this and I'm happy for him. What's the problem?

There's two ways to look at this, they're either:
1.) really excited/proud of the opportunity and want to let the whole world know about their achievement early on
2.) they're really just show offs and care about superficial aspects such as their title or employer name without yet knowing the substance of their prospective job

Give them a break. They’re told to make LinkedIn profiles so companies will take them seriously, add a unique headline, find some influencers to follow, etc. They aren’t creating their profile when they already have 500+ industry connections and 10 years of work experience to lay out.

You know many college grads work as interns for several summers prior to graduation and have jobs lined up at those top employers?

I have noticed a trend these days of graduating college seniors putting “Incoming Marketing Intern” or “Incoming Associate Consultant” before they even start a job. And they post about their new job and thank “everyone that’s supported me on my journey.” It’s so obnoxious.
