I agree. It would be different if your dad was a deadbeat and was trying to freeload. It doesn't sound like that's the case. Why are these other 'family members' telling you to charge rent?

Your Dad is staying with you to help you out while you’re on maternity leave and your husband is away? And you want to charge him rent? That’s some cold hearted sh*t.

I can’t think about ever charging my Dad rent. The thought literally hurts.

I think it is really odd that you have relatives encouraging you to charge him rent. Do they think your dad is freeloading or something?

Maybe he is planning on surprising you with a check when he leaves?

Unless you think he is taking advantage of you in some way, I would not charge him rent. But if you are in a $ bind then you might want to suggest that it would be helpful if he paid the direct costs of utilities while he is staying in your apartment.

Ask him to pay the months of utilities that he's there for. You shouldn't have to pay since you're gone.

No. I would not charge my dad rent. Don’t be ridiculous.

DH travels extensively for work and while on maternity leave decided to join him. My father has been staying at our apartment. It’s helping him out because he’d otherwise have to furnish and rent an apartment. Haven’t been charging him or asking for money, but now we’re extending two more months.

It feels weird to charge him rent, because my parents would never charge us rent, but other family members say we should. FWIW he can afford it fine, actually would save compared to other options.

Thoughts?
