Northern Va here. No problems with our fiddle leaf figs. No special treatment and I'm hardly an expert. They grow like crazy inside (a foot of growth over winter) and get moved outside in the summer. I'm not great about watering.
Yeah, I think a regular fig tree might be hard? I actually have one I was going to plant outside that's sprouted some leaves. I night just stick it in a pot .
Re: direct sunlight--yes coming through a window counts. But our two previous houses before this one had tons of very direct light. What we get now is very different, and the fig trees seem to appreciate it more--not tons if harsh light.
On the other hand, I had to get a grow light for the lemon tree and it's barely alive.
