We were very, very impressed by the campus, but turned off by how weird the students were. Kind of a depressing vibe. We talked to prospective parents whose child was deciding primarily between UChicago and the Ivies, and occasion other top 20 private schools and LACs. Didn't really hear that anyone with certainty was picking some place else over Chicago. Our child had a mixed reaction and will visit some more before deciding.

Homely and unhappy kids...cold weather...tiny bubble surrounded by literal Third World crime and poverty...few in your family have heard of it...slaughtered GPA...not fun. Of course their yield sucks, which is why they rely on ED scams.

Every accepted student who does not enroll does not equal an open spot on the wait-list (for any college, not just UChicago). Students not planning on accepting are built into the acceptance models--schools accept more than they actually intend to enroll. If many more accepted students chose to enroll than they intended they often have to adjust housing etc. but a lot of modeling goes into making these predictions accurate. Waitlists are for the spots that arise when even FEWER students enroll than they anticipated, not if 100% of the accepted students don't enroll.

+1 Consider the source of that hate filled comment. UChicago has more than fulfilled the promise of that admitted student event for my family. It's truly an energized environment all the time not just for show.

I hate hearing this - I have had my doubts too - but DC was very interested and has been accepted. We were very impressed by everything we saw on the visits.


The PP just called the students homely. And you'd even continue reading their post? Your DC has done their research, and you saw it yourself. Trust your instincts.

UChicago put 10k kids on their waitlist. They're being used as a marketing scam so every delusional kid and their parents tell 100 plus friends, family, guidance counselors they "almost got in!"

So, instead of the 4-9% acceptance rate seeming impossible, an app futile, most '19s now think they might have a chance.

The waitlist is another admissions scheme to con '19s out of $100 and hours of their life.

There are 10,000 students on UVA's waitlist. Probably the same with Chicago. Even 100 slots opening isn't going to make much of a difference statistically
