Outdoor play, often with neighborhood friends. Indoor play in bad weather. My third grader often chooses to read or practice an instrument. My first grader often helps me in the kitchen. Sometime I make them clean up the house, but most often they are engaged in other productive pursuits like wrestling each other on the trampoline or hitting trees with sticks in the woods.

Outside, craft, read, help with dinner. I like them to be outside, but I also like chatting with them while I cook. Anything but screens.

With such little outdoor time in FCPS (pathetic 15 min a day), my main goal is outfoor play until dinner.

Mine get home between 3:45 and 4. The younger does whatever, inside outside play (except no screens). Older decides how he is going to get his homework and instrument practice done and then he goes out to play or stays in to read based on that determination. Sometimes the homework and instrument are done after dinner, and that is fine, it works and I usually have more time then anyway to explain or go over concepts. My older had also started helping prep or cook some parts of dinner.

We usually stay at the school playground for about an hour. Then, go home, snack, homework, playing/hanging out before dinner.

I try to have dinner on the table within 30 minutes of getting in the door. My child generally reads. He's also responsible for helping set the table. (Second grader -- I think it makes a difference how old the kid is.)

Are your kids in aftercare? Mine are home at 3PM so there is a lot more time than one hour before dinner. But yes, if my kids were in a daycare, I would absolutely let them unwind with just downtime.

My kindergarten has a little homework but usually they play outside or one likes to read.

Mine do outside time too while I'm making dinner. In bad weather they play or watch tv.
