Can any current families provide info on the search for a new principal? Any schoolwide meetings etc? My kid has an offer for prek4 that we are excited about, just wondering about process for selecting a new leader. Thanks!

Yes, Duke Ellington was "ready" AFTER MANY YEARS OF DELAY. And I say "ready" because it wasn't. So we have to deal with many problems in the building due to that final rush.

Same happened with Marie Reed in Adams Morgan. One month before school was scheduled to start, I said “no way in hell they will be open in 30 days.” They brought in extra labor and there were literally hundreds of workers on the site 24/7 in the month leading up to school. The contractors get the job done when under a deadline.

We are in a bit of a similar situation so I understand your query. We have two children--one in preschool private and the other in elementary grade private--while being Gtown residents. The schools have been lovely, the drive is significant for us and we want to support our local school; especially paying very high property taxes! This coming year we are moving our elementary child to Hyde (who is looking forward to the bus ride for a year) but will send our younger child to K for private because he needs a smaller environment for a couple more years.

We are excited to move to Hyde and after getting the know the school and teachers hope to move our younger child there the following year. I do agree with the previous poster that once Hyde moves back to its renovated school IB enrollment will climb.

Which brings a previously posted question--will the renovation be completed in one more year? I live close by and walk by Hyde often and it seems that only after a year exterior demo has been done. We are worried the renovation will stretch to three vice three years.

Meyer is a great facility. It is better for the kids and teachers than the Georgetown campus. Once renovated, the Georgetown campus will be so much better than it had been. So that’s all in your favor.

Don’t know the IB %s for this year. If you come to Hyde, you will learn that people don’t look at a child in terms of IB or OOB. So, where a kid lives does not matter.

I cannot answer the question about a three year old on a bus. I think that is an evaluation unique to every family and child.

Overall, Hyde is a lovely school. Great teachers and assistant teachers. They know and care about every child. Yes, we lost some families with the move but it remains a happy and inspiring place.

You say you “currently live in Georgetown”. If there is any chance you will be moving away from Georgetown, this might be your best (or one and only?) opportunity to get into Hyde. The available spots will get fewer and fewer once the school has returned to its sparkly new campus.

Before the renovation, about 50% of students were IB, how is it now?
