I had similar issue with a close friend, where I'd be bothered by what she says but she had no idea. I decided I had to say something at the moment or I will feel bad afterwards and probably distance myself from the friendship. It's hard to do at the moment, but I try to call the person out on it quickly and change the subject. (Eg "All one billion Indian people are ALL like that? Anyway, what is new on netflix?")

It's hard when you're stuck in the car with them.
If it's a group of people, I'll just walk away.
I've called out a friend who said racist things about black people to me but it didn't change her views. Now I just say, let's talk about something else.

Well, I didn’t know the fries were for me until after her rant. I just added that in to allude to her being a good friend outside of her disgusting rant.

Oh come on, Joanne, you can’t lump all Indians or all anyone into a group.

Unless she’s completely clueless, she will get it.

I didn’t say anything because I was uncomfortable and didn’t want to get into an argument with one of the FEW friends I have. As I said, if she does it again, I do plan to call her out.

Then what is your question?!?

Read the title of my thread, genius

It wasn’t just the fries, I would’ve been too anxious to say anything regardless (I didn’t even know the fries were for me until after her rant). Talking about race is such a divisive topic and I’ve gotten into so many ugly debates over it that I don’t want to go back down that road. I feel like I can’t change her mind, but I do plan to say something if she says it again.

I say "that's so racist!" In a way that's a little too over the top that it's jokey, but still gets the point across.

So yesterday I was giving my friend a ride home, and I love this girl so much. I haven’t seen her for 6 years because she moved to Switzerland but she’s been back and I just love talking her.

However, on the ride home, she started taking about how much she hates a manager at our job (we work together) who is Indian and then went on a whole rant about how much she hates Indians. As a black man, I was very disturbed as my people go through discrimination as well, but I get anxiety in these situations. She also bought me fries, so I felt even worse calling her out, but I want to let her know that, that type of thinking is outdated and wrong. I guess I’m looking for advice but also how you guys handle these situations
