If it is an exterior wall, are there studs underneath the "beam"? A 2x8 beam sounds more like a rafter to me that is bearing on the exterior studs of the house, so in theory, the hole cut through probably is not an issue. Most load bearing beams are multi-ply, not single ply.

You should hire a structural engineer, not a contractor.

Is it a weight bearing structural piece, a band board or a fascia board?

If the beam is load bearing then the hole should not exceed 40% of its width.

Your house wont fall down but you're not within code.

should be fine. the structure of your home won't be compromised by one hole like you describe. if you watch the This Old House video where the host is showing a homeowner how to install an oven vent hood you can see he actually drills the 6" hole thru a frame support beam.

When I opened the wall I saw around 4"( beam is 2x8) hole for kitchen exhaust going through support beam on the side of the house. Is there cause for concern or it is fine. hole is in the middle of 8" depth. with 2" distance from top and bottom
