You should file for unemployment in the state where you live. They all have reciprocity.
You won't receive unemployment benefits until you have been out of work, so no need to file early, even if you know your job is going away.
Assuming you worked and paid into unemployment (which generally is mandatory) while working for another company (prior to your current 2.5 month employer), you should be eligible for unemployment. It will be paid from your current and former firm.

Subject: VA Unemployment Questions
My company, headquartered in VA, went through an acquisition and was purchased by an out of state company. I was kept on as a transition employee for 2.5 months (my last day being this Friday). I have worked remotely, in VA, for these 2.5 months (and 1+ year prior to that).
Do you know: do I file for unemployment in VA or in the state where the new company is headquartered?
Do I file for unemployment today or wait until I'm officially unemployed?
Am I at risk for not getting unemployment since I was only at the new company for 2.5 months?
