$70k for a single person is a decent amount, even in the dc area.

It may be tough to support a family on that amount but it could be done too.

+1 You *can* afford to live on your own but you'll be throwing most of your money into rent. Find a roommate you can deal with and save some money instead.

List out your debt, total income, and current expenses and people here can advise. I’ve found looking at what others are spending helped us with our budget as well. For instance, we realized we were spending way too much on groceries and have tried to be more conscious about using what we buy wisely and decreasing food waste.
