OP here -- Yes, FCPS makes decisions on weather events, imperfective as it maybe. Here's the rub though: last year before spring break my DCs' elementary classes had 5 or 6 kids in attendance. (That's anecdotal, I realize, but I don't have perspective of the wider drop.) If more parents think it is a waste to go for one day, then the numbers could drop further. Maybe work pressures will keep the attendance up, but we could see a school day that won't count even if school is officially open, right?

have you left your house? I drove today and the roads were 100% clear. There isn't even enough snow to really plow. Plows are just scraping pavement at this point.

The main roads are fine but not neighborhood and secondary roads.

And this is why so many folks get mad about these closing decisions. Why can't FCPS come up with snow bus routes for these areas? How many of these places have folks completely stranded in their houses, unable to drive anywhere, at this point today?

It's one thing if main roads are still bad, it's another if every little cul de sac isn't plowed.

And yes, I completely understand that not every student in FCPS has access to someone to drive them to school. But if that's the case, odds are that they have access to public transit and hence, a main road.

So over these decisions which are overly cautious.

I teach in Herndon and live in Reston almost near the Vienna border. The roads are fine in both, and we often are the snowier parts of FCPS. I think we start on time tomorrow.

You must be WAY out, I just drive in from Vienna and ALL the roads were clear

same here. All our neighborhood and secondary roads are completely clear.

Temps with be high enough today to melt the few remaining places with snow in street

If they are open, they can count on my kids being there. I have used up so much PTO due to weather this winter.

I completely understand people who already planned to travel early, but wouldn’t the rest want their kids in school? Seems like parents would want to catch up on work/finish shopping for Easter baskets/prep for their trip/not have to take another day of leave.

Had scheduled absence already, but I wouldn't be surprised if they remain close.

Between people taking off early for spring break, and the closures yesterday and today, I wonder if FCPS would have enough students in school to count as a full day. If FCPS believes attendance will be low, I suspect that school will be closed tomorrow. I hear so many parents gripe about nothing being accomplished before a break that they don’t send their kids — even when the family isn’t going out of town. I will send my kids to school, but I wonder how many other kids will be there.
