DuVal still talks up the aerospace program, and apparently the program is getting a new building soon. I hear some students complain that it is not all it’s made out to be, but parents seem to love it. I have heard some decent things. That being said, there is so much chaos now at DuVal behind the grade tampering/graduation scandal, I would recommend thinking twice about sending your child there.

Speaking of the scandal, this forum is curiously silent about that. Interesting.

Their Summit Program is impressive. Some advanced students choose to go here, but most choose Roosevelt Science & Tech.

It's just another average PGCPS high school. Not good but not too bad either.

PG HS options are good if your child is a high achiever. There are several speciality programs throughout the county that are doing good things. ERHS has the longest running history of high achievers but the new programs starting throughout the county are producing good results. Please look into the speciality programs page on PGCPS' website. Of particular notice is the program at PGCC. I know several students enrolled there and it's outstanding.

Roosevelt is higher ranked and the kids have higher SAT scores, but both are good offering incredible opportunities for gifted kids. My DC attended elementary and middle school in Prince George’s county and got accepted into two of the BIG 3 private schools in DC. My DC is not alone! That is some what a reflection of the child, but definitely shows that being from PG is not an automatic negative like the Nancies would have you believe. We have chosen to keep my DC in public schools in Prince George’s County Public Schiols. Good luck in your search!

What negative attitude? The OP asked about Douglass and Oxon Hill. I said that neither are great schools, but try to make the most if it before applying elsewhere next year. Oxon Hill's recent test scores show that about 42% of the students are proficient in English while about 15% are proficient in Math. Douglass' scores were even lower. Please get the chip off your shoulder.

If you live close to Oxon Hill High, your child will need to test into that school’s Sci Tech program for next year. Oxon Hill, ER and Flowers high schools each have boundaries for their Sci tech programs. You can also seek a transfer to another county high school that is under capacity.

If your child is TAG or a high academic achiever, and not easily influenced, a PGCPS high school (other than ER) may work. But, as a parent of two PGCPS high schoolers, I agree that you should seriously consider private. I wish I could have done so.

Yes, the person you are referring to is Sergey Brin. I worked with his mother at NASA's G0ddard Space Flight Center.

One of the benefits that ERHS has that other schools don't have is that ERHS has a good working relationship with GSFC. There are a number of opportunities for students to come and visit and get tours at GSFC. Many of the students at ERHS also enter into summer internships at GSFC. There are not a huge number of events, but there are some very good opportunities for the students with a STEM focus.

Welcome to DCUM and PG County.

You don't really need to log in for this site. The majority of users are anonymous.

I teach in PG and wouldn't recommend either school to be honest. If you're renting, just make the most of it for a year and try a catchment for a better school next year. If you've purchased, then I would strongly consider private. If that's outside your budget, then try the lottery next year.

For a quality education, I would only choose Roosevelt in Greenbelt. Oxon Hill would be my 2nd choice but that would be only if I couldn’t afford private. Honestly, I been a resident all my life and our schools for the most part, suck. I have 5th graders (twins) and I do private.
