No, I would not. I would consider the ride safer vest as PP suggests, or I would bring my harnessed booster which only weighs 8 lbs.

I would look into the ride safer vest - we are planning to use it and the booster they make for travel with our tall 4 year old (who weighs less than 40lbs and still uses a 5 point harness in our car).

We have done it many times for vacations. Rental car seats are not great and expensive.

Will someone be back there with him? How long will the drives be? If the belt is hitting the right point on his shoulder and across his hips, it's just you need to make sure he will actually stay in that position. We briefly used a low booster at that age and size on a trip (because that's what ILs showed up to airport with after promising a car seat), and I allowed it only so long as we were back there making sure he wasn't playing with the belt or falling asleep off to one side. The one was a regular (non-inflatable) booster. With the BubbleBum there might be extra tendency to tilt to one side or the other, with a wiggly kid. We do use a BB now for travel, starting around age 5.5. He pretty quickly got the memo on "sit straight and don't mess with your belt."

There was a lightweight Cosco FF/HBB combo seat posted in another thread today. Cosco Finale. For $50 and an extra 8lbs to carry, I would bring that along.

I wouldn’t but more bc I think high back booster is still necessary to keep good belt positioning at that age and for rides of longer duration. I use bubble bum for short carpools with my 6-yr old.

In a pinch in an emergency or as a regular thing?

I don't know any 4 year olds who have the impulse control to sit up straight and not play with the seatbelt.

He's currently still in a 5 point harness. Is the bubble bum safe? We will be traveling on the highway a decent amount.
