Shepherd usually has several activities in and around February--a Black History Month assembly with music, dance, etc. (although last year it was actually held in March), the 29th annual Jazz Night, and other activities. Also, there are Black History Month projects featuring figures from local and American history decorating the walls of the school.

Nothing, because they make an intentional point of including black history and culture and black perspectives throughout the school year and throughout multiple subjects. They did participate in the Black Lives Matter Week of Action.

DCPS still has some weird curricula. At my child's elementary school four years ago, they did a long unit on DC history and the treatment of Marion Barry would have given even the North Korean propaganda ministry pause. Maybe it was just the teacher, but it seemed that she was using some kind of curriculum guide.


DC history is part of the curriculum (just like every other state in the country has kids do a unit on state history), but I think that each school does it their own way.


Ha! i doubt if any school in the District teaches that Barry was an incompetent, tax-cheating crack addict who, in Mayor Williams' words, tried to fly DC into a hillside. Any teacher who would honestly teach that is likely to be fired at DCPS!

It still should be celebrated or taught as a matter of History.
