DCPS still has some weird curricula. At my child's elementary school four years ago, they did a long unit on DC history and the treatment of Marion Barry would have given even the North Korean propaganda ministry pause. Maybe it was just the teacher, but it seemed that she was using some kind of curriculum guide.
DC history is part of the curriculum (just like every other state in the country has kids do a unit on state history), but I think that each school does it their own way.
