That's nice if you have a "breadwinner." In our household, we both work. If one of us dies, the other one will presumably KEEP working. You can't get welfare, foodstamps, section 8 and Medicaid for a dead person. The kids would get some SS survivors benefits until they are 18 but it's not going to replace the salary and benefits of a GS-15 government employee.

Also, I don't think you understand actuarial science or how risk is priced. There are businesses that insure 80-year-olds. There are business that insure people with HIV. As others have pointed out, there are business that insure active-duty military. If a business can find a way make money, they will do it.

I got it through Met Life-though I think they have a different name now. Got the insurance no problem, not expensive with one caveat: no payout if I kill myself.

I have a very similar health background. I worked with a broker who referred me to Banner Life. They are apparently more willing to underwrite controlled mental health conditions, but of course you will not likely qualify for preferred rates. They’re in business to make money!

I'm lucky I have a group plan through work. I have a life insurance scarlet letter because my father had a heart attach prior to 60 y/o. Was very invasive and stressful going through underwriting and finding you pay higher rates or don't qualify.

Select quote will get your information and find a company that gives you the best rates.

We have used them twice. We bought a policy when kids were born.... then added a policy to increase coverage (but they put us with a different insurer than we had with our first policy).

Getting life insurance can feel very invasive. That's why there are group plans offered by employers (like FEGLI). The rates are higher, but they take all comers. By going on your own, you save money IF you are better than average health. If you are on the lower half of the health-scale, then you are better off going with an employer plan (if that is an option).

We used USAA because DH is military and we needed the war clause. I do not think they are they have the best prices by far. They dinged DH and charged a higher rate for his cholesterol result (which was normal).

My husband has USAA life insurance because they are one of the few companies that will insure active duty military.

I, however, was quoted an insanely high rate b/c of mental health problems over a decade ago, and a basal cell carcinoma 6 years ago.

USAA is lousy for life insurance. They made my husband go through all kinds of tests and because he has a CPAP charged a lot more.

USAA has notoriously tough underwriting.

Try going through a broker. We ended up getting insurance through Prudential.

Insurance through work isn’t necessarily portable.

Use a broker. They will know the best company. Highly recommend Leonard Kopp in Bethesda.
We use USAA for many things, but not life insurance.

Try another company. You might not get the lowest rate, but you can get a rate.

I know what it is like to be uninsurable; 5 years ago I had active cancer. I was not insurable for any price.

Today, I can buy life insurance (but can not afford it). My rate is about 5000/yr per $100K. I am 55, cancer survivor (metastatic), and have multiple cardiac stents.

My only insurance is through work (6 x my salary, or 1.1 mil).

Every company has their own risk parameters. I applied for a 2m policy from one company that wanted to charge me $6500 year for 30 year term and the same policy is $2500 year from an A-rated company (Sentry). Sentry doesn't deny you for depression. If you kill yourself within the 1st two years, there's no payout. If you kill yourself in year 3, there's a payout.

I have suffered from depression (managed by medication) for over 10 years. Fortunately for me, I have been able to stay functional, and my medication has worked. I recently signed up for term-life insurance because we have our DD, and got denied because of my depression medication. We applied to USAA. Anyone have this situation? What kinds of protection did you put in place for your child?
