2. Would saving that tuition money now make grad school a possibility or is money not a concern?

Yes, I can. Some SLACS are now high as $81,000 per year. If you subtract $28,000, the school is still more expensive than UVA at my student's tuition of $26,000. Vanderbilt is $65K. If you subtract the $28K that my DS was offered by some SLACs, the difference is STILL more than the $26,000 in-state fee he was charged when he entered. So UVA was a better deal financially than the SLACs with the $28K offer. Now, since you posted, OP has said he or she received $44K. $65K minus 44K is still $21K in the hole but a better deal than UVA, which now is @ $32K for entering students. However, if it were NYC offering the $44K, then UVA would be a better deal. Remember also that the delta between the expensive privates and in-state UVA is paid in after tax dollars, so if you are in the 40% tax bracket, you basically have to double the delta in order to pay the difference.

I’m a UVA alum that absolutely adores my school, but I say do Vanderbilt! You (or your parents) will be very glad to save all that money which you can put towards grad school or other costs.

What will you study? I would compare programs in detail, the national prestige of Vandy versus UVA is not too different to merit one over the other. But free money may mean a lot of love from Vandy, so that would swing my vote.

Vandy offered me $44000 pretty much for every single year

In this instance, Vanderbilt over anything but the Ivies you mentioned. Not a tough call.
