Because it's not unsafe in that Riviera Maya area normally. Tourism is a big source of income for Mexico, they prioritize keeping tourist zones safe. I go every year with my kids and love it. I'm sorry this threat has happened.
But there are lots of other places in the Carribbean you could go that you would love too, and have less risk. I agree most people will still be ok, but why take a chance? Lots of other nice places are happy to take your money. Plus why not try somewhere new? Mexico beaches were just meh compared to the carribbean places I’ve been.

If you can cancel your plans, do it. There is a reason why it costs 1/2 as much as anywhere else to go to Mexico. Don't gamble with your kids' lives.
