Students will be approximately 26-28 years old when they start actual practice.
Most Drs do an Internship of a year after med school then a Residency which is 3-4 years. They are practicing Drs but aren't making the big bucks yet and work about 80-100 hrs per week as a resident.

No, it's longer.
Basic school - 12 years
Undergrad degree - 4 years
Med school - 3 years
Residency - 3 - 7 years (general medicine - 3 years, neuro surgery - 7 years) - You do get paid during this period but not much (about $50K per year, i think)

Its fine for her to major in chemistry or biology. In the US medical schools like you to have had some experience in a medical field before applying. She should consider training as an ENT or working in a doctors office during the summers.

Go to any 4 year college and get at least a 3.7 GPA and take the MCAT end of junior year and expect to do very well on that in order to get into a medical school.
She can get her bachelors degree in anything, it doesnt have to be in science.
