Yes! I was kind of strict (read: crazy) about feeding my child only home made organic purees but I quickly learned to love organic applesauce and canned pumpkin from the grocery store. Both can go straight from the jar to the mouth and are healthy. Bananas and avocados are also awesome for quick meals.

The pre-made applesauce you're eating is perfectly safe for your child. In fact, the asorbic acid in the applesauce is a good source of vitamin C. You do not need to buy the baby food version. In this case, it's the same stuff.

Baby food isn't a modern invention. Massed produced baby food is starting around the time of the industrial revolution.

The idea of baby food as mashed up adult food is a modern invention. Look in old cookbooks and there are recipes for variations of gruel, e.g.

Op, when introducing a new food--everything in moderation. If there's a sensitivity, you'll probably see it the second time you feed the food.

Not true! You have to be careful about added salt in adult food. There is so much added salt in processed adult food.

Obviously I don’t think PP was implying that OP give her baby Doritos or other types of processed adult food

Baby food does not need to come out of a special jar or pouch, either. Just watch for added sugar.

No, it's not a problem. Yes, you can give it to him.

He can also just eat apples. Look at baby led weaning (which is not about weaning, it's about introducing solids). You just give real food, let them chew on it a bit, etc.

...or does he actually need baby food or apples I cook and puree myself? He's five months and started solids a week. He's taken to it like he'd been waiting for this since birth - I really don't need to thin out the foods, he sucks down thick purees with gusto. My applesauce has added ascorbic acid - is this a problem for babies?
