Won’t work. People “reload” and manufacture it themselves. Almost all gun stores sell reloading equipment and it takes about as much skill as baking cupcakes. A huge ammo tax will just cause more of this.

The bigger problem is that $300 is a laughably low amount for many if not most guns. Most of my guns cost many times that amount. Some have single parts that cost many times that amount.

Most guns used in crimes are relatively new.

What we need to do is make gun owners legally responsible for not reporting lost or stolen weapons subsequently used in a crime. This will allow us to prosecute straw purchasers as well as people who give their shifty friends a gun.

Individuals who legitimately have a gun stolen and promptly report it will not be harmed.

If we do this, after a few years, criminals will start having trouble getting guns.

Part of the problem is that guns KEEP getting on the street.

Gun registration and mandatory filing every time a gun changes ownership, periodic inspections would be a good start. Gun owners have to be able to account for their guns.

Treat them the way we do cars.

Not to mention, limits on how many guns someone can purchase in a given time frame. There are lots of straw purchasers out there feeding the black market and we have virtually zero checks and balances on it.

If we somehow manage the pass decent gun control laws in this country, we will still have the issue of millions of illegal guns already out there, obviously.

I would like to hear others’ thoughts on how we can work to get those illegal guns off the streets, such as buyback programs and undercover operations.
