When you say "Contemporary" - Do you mean set in the present-ish - or do you mean written relatively recently?

So if Cutting for Stone was plodding, then Fates and Furies surely will be!

OP here. I meant as in written fairly recently. I feel so out of the loop regarding new fiction....
I went to Key West last year so I read To Have and Have Not, lol....I mean, it's a classic, but seriously, I need something I can mention during dinner conversation and not sound like a high school student.

I recently came back from a trip and read "Before we were yours" https://www.amazon.com/Before-We-Were-Yours-Novel/dp/0425284689

I enjoyed it, but I don't know that it's necessarily "sophisticated."

Also I liked "Lilac Girls" https://www.amazon.com/Lilac-Girls-Martha-Hall-Kelly-ebook/dp/B011G3HI9U/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1518483308&sr=1-3&keywords=Lilac+girls

A book that's a bit deeper, but not recently written that I REALLY loved was "Banished Children of Eve." This was excellent! https://www.amazon.com/Banished-Children-Eve-Novel-Civil-ebook/dp/B013JQMCBQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1518483255&sr=1-1&keywords=banished+children+of+eve

You should make an account on Good Reads, spend a few minutes selecting books that you’ve liked, and getting recommendations based on your reading history. It sounds like you want absorbing literary fiction. American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld is great, so is Prep. I just read The Significance of All Things (or something like that) by Elizabeth Gilbert and it was quite good. Many people love mystery thrillers like Girl on a Train — it’s not lit fic per se but it’s a page turner.

It's been a long time since I read a book cover to cover; I find myself spending hours reading online newspapers, magazines, message boards (ha!), etc.
I'm going away for a very relaxing vacation with a lot of downtime, no TV, the whole nine...I intend to read a book or two!
I'd like something contemporary, not too "out there" (not really into fantasy/sci-fi), and fairly sophisticated (for lack of a better term; no supermarket novels).

Last year I was in FL for a week and tried to read Cutting for Stone as I lounged near the beach/pool. It was good, but SO plodding: I abandoned it after about 100 pages.

Any and all recommendations appreciated!
