I've found that basketball is hard because the teams are relatively small and there aren't that many winter alternatives.

I’d say at WMS it’s fairly rare for a 6th grader to make the soccer team. Probably only one or two of the very best travel players do. By 8th grade, quite a few do. I’m not sure about basketball.

DD tried out for MS tennis team in 6th grade and made it but she was only one of 3 6th graders that made the team out of 20 or so that tried out so yes, highly competivive. Didn’t think it would be as competivite as other sports like soccer but it is.

I’m in Arlington as well, for soccer they are all travel players that make the team and many travel players don’t make the team. This is Swanson, not sure other MS if same

We are in Arlington and most high level players don’t play for middle school team for soccer. There isn’t time with club team. My kid didn’t even want to tryout.

OP it entirely depends on the school. Where I am in Prince William County, there are some schools where it is rather easy to make the teams, and others where it is quite competitive. At my DC's school, there are very few 6th graders on the sports teams.

OP, see above. Where are you located? That will help people answer you. If your child's school system is FCPS there are no school-based team sports in MS, as far as I know. Are you really referring to club sports during the MS years or are you in a school system that does have sports?

For a kid of the higher end of average ability, is getting on a basketball or soccer team for their middle school pretty much impossible? My husband has already let our daughter (who is starting 6th this fall) to prepare herself to not make it onto any teams as it is much more competitive. Do you know any kids on middle school soccer or basketball teams? What are their skills like?
